Introducing the client

Founded in 1946 and still the UK’s largest manufacturer of beds, the Silentnight Group “make and supply a good night’s sleep” for hundreds of thousands of people across Britain every year.

What was the challenge?

With 7 different brands, producing over 500,000 beds each year which are sold across hundreds of different High St retailers and online stores, how does the UK’s biggest bed manufacturer keep insight and control over its sales?

The answer is, of course, Cognos. In fact, Silentnight are the perfect business case for the way in which both the software and the insight it gives can drive impressive business efficiency.

Silentnight runs hundreds of Cognos trend reports regularly including sales information, production information, distribution information and performance reporting. Some of the reports are used to assist with live operations, such as the logistics information flows through Cognos daily. This enables warehouse teams to see which products are due for dispatch and where they need to go. Silentnight also runs a vital sales dashboard that’s updated each day.

With Cognos being an integral and mission critical part of daily life, Silentnight need a safe pair of hands for support. This was always provided directly by Cognos, but when they were bought out by IBM in 2013, Silentnight needed to find another partner.

What happened?

Triangle were recommended to Silentnight by IBM as a support team with deep, technical knowledge, to be on hand to troubleshoot, assist in training, upgrades and licensing. This is exactly what we have been doing for the company, since 2013.

At Triangle, we believe software should give businesses control, not control them. As part of this, we help our clients remain as self-sufficient as possible. Something Silentnight do effortlessly.

Using Cognos planning, the company run a fully-fledged forecasting system, that shows yesterday’s sales, and provides a week-to-date, month-to-date, year-to-date view of this year, versus last year, versus forecast.

These critical reports are available daily, so that the business as a whole can see where they are, against where they hope to be.

In addition, they Cognos to keep track of which beds are on display in which retail customer’s stores at any one time. This enables them to support retailers in selling more Silentnight products.

What was the outcome?

Using Cognos to extract business intelligence, Silentnight has been able to identify areas of improvement and take steps to improve efficiency across its operations.

For example, after using Cognos to look at trends in product returns, the company was able to then address important product and customer issues, reducing the number of returns overall. Simon Freeman explains; “It’s enabled us to bring our returns down very significantly, over the last 3 years and make good steps in improving profitability.”

Improvements such as these continue to make a positive financial impact on the business as a whole.

What is it like working with Triangle?

To be an effective support provider, you’ve got to be able to rely on them. Triangle is always responsive, professional, knowledgeable and there whenever you need them.
