Cognos Analytics R6 (11.0.6) is here. The time has come, IBM has unleashed the latest release of Cognos Analytics 11.  With Cognos Analytics, IBM has taken the position of releasing new features and functions on a regular schedule.  At the moment this is approximately every 2-3 months. So without further ado here is Cognos Analytics R6.

What are the new features and functions in Cognos Analytics R6 11.0.6?

The dashboarding capabilities have been extended within Cognos Analytics R6.  It is now possible to build dashboards using an OLAP data source, such as a PowerCube or TM1.  Those familiar with using multidimensional sources will appreciate the ability to drill up or down on your data to find answers to your questions.

Other enhancements to Cognos Analytics R6’s dashboards include being able to sort on stacked or clustered charts, improved scaling of text, disconnecting widgets so filtering on one chart will not affect other visuals on display.

Within reporting it is now possible to freeze column headings on lists.  You also now have the ability to edit queries when using a Data Module as a source.  This will allow for custom calculations and to control filters using values from prompts.

Mapping in Cognos Analytics R6 continues to evolve, making this a powerful tool for users.  Further layers have been included so it is possible to plot your data from country level down to a town.  In fact with Cognos Analytics R6 postal code support is now included.  Further work has been done to highlight ambiguous and unrecognised regions rather than just ignoring them from the visualisation.

What Would I Like To See In Cognos Analytics R7 11.0.7?

From a dash-boarding point of view, it would be great if we had the ability to export to a PDF in Cognos Analytics R7 11.0.7.

I’ve always wanted query functions built in that will allow for relative date/time data to be defined.  At the moment if this is not available in a data warehouse, new queries with logic need to be created for reports.

The good thing with Cognos Analytics is that IBM are allowing the user community to have an input into enhancements to future releases.  A dedicated IBM Request For Enhancements (RFE) site is available for changes to be considered.  You also have the ability to browse requests and vote for those that you are in favour for.
