Having access to and finding a reliable stream of up-to-date information is critical for researchers and scientists as they deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Through a brand new initiative, IBM and The Weather Channel are making it easier for people around the globe to stay informed and up-to-date on coronavirus, using IBM Cognos Analytics and The Weather Channel app.

Launched on 25th March 2020, the interactive global dashboard built in IBM Cognos Analytics is providing the general public, researchers and government officials with detailed and current information about coronavirus and its spread across the world.

The World Health Organisation and John Hopkins University are already making several tools available to track coronavirus. However, unfortunately, and rather dangerously, cybercriminals are creating bogus coronavirus maps which infect users’ systems with malware.

Rising to the challenge to fight back against cybercriminals and provide user’s with a single and reliable source of the truth, IBM is pulling data from the World Health Organisation and U.S. government sources and also plans to collect data from national health departments outside of the U.S.

As a result, this data can be summarised in the IBM Cognos Analytics dashboard and interpreted with ease. For example, users can view active case statistics, deaths and patient recoveries by country; number of cases by region; and historical trends.

To accompany the coronavirus dashboard built in IBM Cognos Analytics, IBM and The Weather Channel have developed an Incidents Map which can be found on The Weather Channel app and online at

The Incidents Map provides data by state, as well as country-level data. Furthermore, U.S. state-level trend graphs and latest coronavirus news from The Weather Channel editorial team are also included, alongside public health information and education materials.

Both tools produced by IBM and The Weather Channel ensure that researchers, scientists and the general public are kept informed, without the associated risks posed by cybercriminals and inaccurate reporting sources.
